Spain at Christmas: Fun Times All Round

Spain’s a pretty cool place to go at Christmas despite not usually featuring the snow, sledgeing and Santa Claus crazy fun we have here in the US and UK. Travel there during the months of December and January and you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see that there is lots of activity and action on the streets as people roam around wandering what to buy and bump into old family friends.

For the best in what to see in Spain at Christmas however you’ve got to pick some of the things out of this list.

La Misa del Gallo

This activity that takes place on Christmas eve sees Spaniards head out into the streets to march down into the central square while singing, drinking and generally just having a really rawkus time. Check out the guitars slung over locals shoulders as they swig wine in the other hand.

Boxing Day Attractions

Boxing Day is the perfect day to see Spain’s major attraction as most of the country remains at home on this day having had their fair share of fun the night before. If you’re in either of Spain’s major cities of Barcelona or Madrid it’s worth checking out attractions like the Sagrada de Familia or the Prado and wander around their fantastic corridors in relative peace.

El Gordo

The “fat one” as the Spanish call it is actually a lottery draw and an old tradition that has made many millionaires out of Spain since it first started in the late 19th century. Nowadays crowds gather to watch it in local pubs with their tickets in hand, desperately waiting for their numbers to be called. A lot of fun to witness first hand.
